Traditions

I'm a sucker for tradition and old family photos however we don't have either. I love the idea of having something to look forward to each year that we do as a family. I love the thought of my kids always remembering something specific and wanting to do it with their families too.

Growing up we didn't have much money so one thing we did was go to Opryland and see the lights. I still enjoy it however Jeremy thinks it's stupid so it's not always the fun time I envision. We also would always drive to 109 to see the lights there but we have yet to take our kids.

This year I want it to be different!!! I really want to institute at least 1 new tradition...seeing lights, baking cookies, something. So what traditions do you have? Any that you want to start? Come on people I need ideas!!!

We do the Opryland lights too! I thinks it's soooo fun. Boston loves it! ON Christmas eve, we always drive around local neighborhoods and look at lights too. We are starting the Elf on a Shelf thing this year. I try to make Christmas cookies...the kind you roll out, cut out, and decorate....lots of work, but B loves it. We each get one new ornament for our personal tree and then one for the family tree ('cause we have many trees!)Um....that's all i can think of right now.....

Hmmmmm....Last year McKinley shared some eggnog with her Daddy while watching Rudolph, one of his childhood traditions. Then we loaded her up in her pj's and went to some magnificent lights down here, we actually went three times. Could never get the timing of Opryland right with bedtimes. Uhm, we cook for sure. We made a birthday cake for Jesus last year and she made us all sing Happy Birthday to Jesus after Christmas lunch when my family was here - totally not planned, so I thought it was sweet. I would love to take neighbors some sweet treats, I think that would be a great tradition. And I want to fill my Christmas book basket, that sits under the tree, more with real nativity stories, and her pick a new one each night but the basket only has a few things so far. Oh and I get the kids one new ornament each year to one day pass to them when they marry.

I think my favorite thing that we do is make a Happy Birthday Jesus cake on Christmas Day. The boys help with decorating it and we sing Happy Birthday to Jesus.
I let the boys (when they were younger, I picked them out for them) pick out a new ornament each year. Although last year we had Boba Fett and Darth Vader hanging on our tree- the whole point was so when they left home they would have ornaments to take with them. :)
We take a night and drive all around to see Christmas lights- the boys get in their jammies and we go.

Sarah,
Traditions are great for kids, they
make them feel secure, and loved
We take a Happy Birthday Jesus cake to Madison Creek Baptist Church live nativity every year. We began this when he was 3 years old and he insists we go every year. In fact, the church choir director dresses Austin up as a shepherd now and he participates
in the nativity scene each year, rain or snow, or cold! Then we drive through the neighborhoods and look at all the christmas lights, and head home for hot chocolate. It doesn't have to be expensive, kids just want to be with you! We also get new ornaments
each year so the boys will have their own when they move out on their own.
